ALL SUMMER swallows have been nesting in the empty buildings at the back of the workhouse, entertaining us with their aerial manoeuvres as they swoop and dive, and help to keep down the local bug population and midges from the nearby lake.

We sat in the late evening summer sun recently, and suddenly the air was full of beating wings as at least ten young recently fledged swallows emerged from their nests in the old buildings surrounding the old workhouse B&B to test out their new wings. For about half-an-hour they gracefully arced overhead, seemingly unaware of our presence in the courtyard, before spiralling higher and out of sight.

Nature re-born for another year and a life-affirming moment that makes it all worth while.
